User Agreement (Terms of Use)
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY. By downloading, installing, or using Ona, you agree to this End User License Agreement (“EULA,” also called the User Agreement or “Agreement”). If you do not agree, do not use the app.
1. What Ona is
Ona is a local, offline social feed simulation for iPhone. You create a profile and posts. Other participants in the feed are simulated characters generated by software and on-device artificial intelligence. They are not real people. They do not have real lives, real identities, or real awareness of you.
Ona also offers an optional Live / Broadcast mode from a dedicated Live tab: you may turn on your front camera for a private, on-device live preview while simulated residents appear to watch — with a live chat of short comments, emoji reactions, hearts, and “joined” notices generated on your device from what the camera sees. Broadcasts are not streamed to the internet, recorded, or saved to your feed.
The app may present these characters using social-media-style language such as “people” or “residents” for immersion. That wording is fictional framing only. It must not be understood as a statement that they are human.
2. Acceptance and eligibility
You must be able to form a binding contract in your jurisdiction to use Ona. If you are under 18, you should use Ona only with permission from a parent or legal guardian who accepts this Agreement on your behalf.
Ona is not intended for children under 13.
3. Important warning — simulated characters are not real
You acknowledge and agree that:
- Every character except you is entirely fictional and software-generated.
- No character is a real person, even if a name, photo-style avatar, backstory, or writing style feels realistic.
- Characters cannot truly know you, care about you, miss you, or form reciprocal human relationships.
- Any “relationship,” “friendship,” or emotional bond you experience is one-sided and directed at a simulation.
- Characters may say things that seem personal, intimate, or supportive. Those statements are generated text, not genuine human intent.
4. Emotional involvement and mental health
Ona is entertainment and creative simulation, not a substitute for human connection, therapy, counseling, crisis support, or medical care.
You agree that you understand the following risks:
- Parasocial attachment: Feeling strongly attached to a simulated character can affect mood, sleep, or real-world relationships.
- Emotional dependency: Relying on characters for validation, comfort, or companionship may reduce healthy contact with real people.
- Distress: Characters may disagree with you, ignore you, dislike your posts, or say unexpected things. That can feel upsetting even though it is not real interpersonal rejection.
- Misinterpretation: Generated text can be inconsistent, inaccurate, or inappropriate despite safeguards.
If you feel distressed, lonely, or preoccupied with characters in a way that interferes with daily life, stop using Ona and seek support from qualified professionals, trusted friends, family, or crisis services in your area. In the United States, you can call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Outside the U.S., contact local emergency or mental health services.
We do not provide mental health services and are not responsible for emotional outcomes from your use of Ona.
5. No professional advice
Content in Ona — including posts, comments, and character replies — is generated fiction. It is not:
- Medical, psychological, legal, financial, or safety advice.
- A diagnosis, treatment plan, or crisis intervention.
- Relationship advice you should follow in real life.
Do not make real-world decisions based on character output. Always consult qualified professionals for serious matters.
6. AI-generated content
Character content is produced by automated systems, including Apple’s on-device models when available. You understand that:
- Output may be wrong, offensive, biased, repetitive, or nonsensical despite filtering.
- Output is not reviewed by us before you see it.
- We do not guarantee any particular tone, accuracy, or safety of generated text.
- You use generated content at your own risk.
If you encounter content you find harmful, you can stop using the app, disable community simulation in Settings, or use “Restart everything” to reset the community.
7. Zero tolerance for objectionable content and abusive behavior
Ona has ZERO TOLERANCE for objectionable content and abusive users. You agree that you will not create, type, or submit any content that is unlawful, hateful, harassing, threatening, defamatory, discriminatory, sexually explicit, obscene, violent, or otherwise objectionable, and that you will not use Ona to abuse, harass, or harm anyone.
To keep Ona safe, the app provides safety tools you can use at any time:
- Filtering: Content you enter and content generated within the community is automatically screened on your device, and objectionable content is blocked or removed.
- Reporting (flagging): You can report any post or comment. Reported content is hidden from your feed immediately.
- Blocking: You can block any character. Blocking instantly removes that character’s content from your feed and stops them from appearing or generating content, and it flags the content for the developer.
We do not tolerate abusive behavior or objectionable content. When content is reported or a user is blocked, the developer will act on the report — including removing the offending content and ejecting the offending user from your community — within 24 hours. Repeated attempts to submit objectionable content may result in termination of your access under Section 17.
You are responsible for what you choose to type into Ona. You also agree not to:
- Store or enter illegal content, credentials, or highly sensitive personal data you cannot afford to lose on-device.
- Harass, threaten, or impersonate real individuals (you are the only real user, but your posts are still your responsibility).
- Attempt to reverse-engineer or misuse the app in violation of law or Apple’s policies.
Your posts and profile remain on your device. Reports you choose to send to the developer (for example, by email) are the only content that leaves your device, and only when you send them.
8. Privacy
Your use of Ona is also governed by Ona’s Privacy Policy, which explains that data stays on your device by default. By using Ona, you acknowledge that policy.
9. Optional internet feature
If you enable “Let people look things up online,” Ona may search public reference and news sources over the internet as described in the Privacy Policy, so characters can write about topics they would not otherwise know. That feature is optional and off by default. Search results come from third-party sources, may be inaccurate or out of date, and are reworded by a simulated character — treat anything a character says as fiction, not as fact. You are responsible for any mobile data or network charges.
10. Broadcast mode (optional)
If you choose to go live / broadcast in Ona:
- Ona accesses your front camera only while you are actively broadcasting.
- Video is shown to you on your device as a live preview only. It is not recorded, stored on our servers, uploaded, or streamed to the internet or to other users.
- Simulated residents may appear to watch with a live chat feed of short comments, emoji reactions, hearts, and “joined” notices. All of it is generated on your device from what the camera sees (analysed on-device only), is shown only to you, and is discarded when the broadcast ends — none of it is saved to your feed.
- You are responsible for what appears in your camera frame and for broadcasting only in appropriate, lawful settings.
11. In-app purchases
Ona offers optional paid features (such as unlocking additional character pools). Purchases are processed by Apple. All sales are final except where required by applicable law or Apple’s policies. Feature availability may change.
12. Intellectual property
Ona, its design, persona definitions, and software are owned by the developer or licensors. You receive a limited, personal, non-transferable, revocable license to use Ona for personal, non-commercial purposes in accordance with this Agreement and Apple’s App Store rules.
You retain ownership of text you type. Because content stays on your device, you grant no license to us (we never receive it).
13. Disclaimers
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, ONA IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.
We do not warrant that Ona will be uninterrupted, error-free, emotionally satisfying, or that generated content will meet your expectations.
14. Limitation of liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE DEVELOPER AND ITS AFFILIATES, OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES, AND AGENTS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, GOODWILL, OR EMOTIONAL DISTRESS, ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF ONA OR SIMULATED CHARACTERS, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY.
OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM RELATED TO ONA SHALL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID FOR ONA OR IN-APP PURCHASES IN THE TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM, OR (B) FIFTY U.S. DOLLARS (US $50).
Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations; in those cases, our liability is limited to the fullest extent permitted by law.
15. Indemnification
You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless the developer from claims arising out of your misuse of Ona, your violation of this Agreement, or your violation of any law or third-party right, to the extent permitted by law.
16. Restart and data loss
Using “Restart everything” permanently deletes your local profile, posts, and community history. This action cannot be undone. You accept that risk when you choose to reset.
17. Changes to Ona and this Agreement
We may update Ona or this Agreement at any time. Updated terms will be indicated by a new effective date. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance. If you do not agree, stop using Ona and delete the app.
18. Termination
You may stop using Ona at any time by deleting the app. We may discontinue Ona or revoke access if you violate this Agreement or if required by Apple or law.
19. Governing law and disputes
This Agreement is governed by the laws of the United States and the State of Delaware, excluding conflict-of-law rules, except where your local consumer protection laws require otherwise.
Any dispute shall be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Delaware, unless applicable law requires a different venue. You waive any right to participate in a class action against us to the extent allowed by law.
20. Apple
You acknowledge that Apple is not a party to this Agreement and is not responsible for Ona or its content. Apple’s App Store terms and license rules also apply.
21. Severability
If any provision of this Agreement is unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in effect.
22. Entire agreement
This Agreement and the Privacy Policy constitute the entire agreement between you and the developer regarding Ona and supersede prior understandings on the same subject.
23. Contact
Questions about this Agreement, support requests, or reports of objectionable content may be sent to onaofflineapp@gmail.com. We aim to respond to support requests and act on content reports within 24 hours.
By tapping “I agree” during onboarding or continuing to use Ona, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agree to this End User License Agreement (EULA) and the Privacy Policy.
